My Final 'New Elizabethan' Hair Design

This is the design I've decided to use as my Final 'New Elizabethan' Hair design. I definitely think when you look at this design you think Elizabethan from the huge bouffant and the pearls framing the face, what makes it contemporary is messiness of the hair design and also the frizzing at the bottom. I think this is typical Elizabethan hair design as they wore the half up half down a lot. I want the pearls to be placed right next to each other this also makes it slightly contemporary as the Elizabethan era they tended to place them very spaced out. As this design will be created on me I want the my hair colour to make this hair design contemporary as I want it to slightly reflect the brightness of Queen Elizabeth I's orange hair as my hair is dark purple. This links to the fact Queen Elizabeth I's hair colour was artificially as she wore wigs.

How to insert Padding into the Hair

  • Start of by sectioning the hair from the front of the ear so you have room to create 2 to 3 rows of curls (Depends what hairstyle your creating)

  • Once sectioned the hair you need to figure out where you want have your mini bouffant.
  • When you've decided where you want the mini bouffant, section some hair to go over the padding once secured in.
  • Place your padding where you've sectioned the hair off and see if it looks ok. Once you've done this you will need to clip off the section going over the padding to the side, get a small section of hair and create a french braid (like the image below) make sure it's all secure because this is going to act as an anchor for the padding.
  • Place your padding on the anchor braid and pin to secure it on.
  • With the section clipped away place this over your padding to see if there are any gaps and whether you can see the padding.
  • If you can see the padding get a small section of hair from under the padding and pull over the padding, pin the ends under the padding and pull the initial section of hair onto the padding.
  • Use a pin to conceal any gaps with hair.

Final Look

New Elizabethan Hair Designs

We were asked to create 3 contemporary Elizabethan Hairstyle's in order to come up with a Final design.

Design 1

For this look I based it round the heart shape hairstyle which was very commonly used in the Elizabethan era. What also makes it Elizabethan is the pearls round the front. To make it more contemporary I decided to make the heart shape very messy also at the back is going to consist of french braids running from the nape of the neck to about the crown.

I got inspiration for the messy Heart shape from the

This is an Actress playing the role of Elizabeth I, I used the idea of using pearls round the
front part of the hair. However I would use more all lined together and slightly bigger.

These hairstyles are from the Pre Fall 2013 Chanel runway. I really liked the french braid running up from the nape of the neck. This makes the normal Elizabethan heart shape hairstyle modern.

Design 2

My second design is a typical Elizabethan Bouffant, however slightly more exaggerated and messier. Again I want to incorporate pearls round the front hair line. However what makes it contemporary is the frizzy hair at the bottom, I'll use the frizzing technique which I've already learnt previously.

I took inspiration from this Portrait of Elizabeth, where she has her hair styled into a Bouffant and at the bottom she has a couple of wave pieces of hair resting on her shoulders.

In my design this would be the texture at the bottom using the remaining hair that didn't go
in the Bouffant. My design is like a half up half
down hair style but over exaggerated.

I got inspiration for the messy bouffant from this image, I like how you can see the clear structure but it's not neat. I'd create this using padding to create the height. I would also backcomb slightly for even more texture and height.

Design 3

This is my third design, this slightly more Elizabethan than contemporary but I think what makes it different is the double bumps. At the front I'd use padding to create the heart shape, then at the back I would have two padded sections of hair folding inwards, similar to a french twist but two side by side. The hair would be completely crimped as this would help to give texture and would thicken the hair too.

I took inspiration from this image which has a very clear center parting which was typical for Elizabethan's to wear their hair. I don't want my small bouffant's to be this big and high

I want it to look similar to this hairstyle which I've previously done when we were experimenting with padding and Elizabethan Hairstyles. I really liked how it turned out and it's something I've not come across from looking at Elizabethan Portraits, which makes it contemporary. I used four pieces of padding to create this double heart shape.

Creating an Elizabethan Hairstyle

We had to create a Elizabethan Hairstyle using all the techniques we have learnt. I started off by curling the front section of the hair as I wanted them to cool while I created the rest of the hairstyle.

Once I'd curled the first section I then went onto Crimping the rest of the hair as this was going to be the texture of my Bouffant, I crimped the hair then brushed it out so the hair expanded.

I then went on to creating the bouffant. I did this by sectioning a small part of hair at the front, I then went onto deciding where I was going to place me padding once I'd decided where the padding was going I created a tight french braid as this was going to act as my anchor for my padding. Once I'd pined the padding into the french braid I pulled a section from under the padding and placed this over the padding as this was going to help me disguise the padding better, after that I pulled the front section of the padding to create this high bouffant. I tried my best to make sure it was perfect.

After creating the Bouffant it was time to use the pin curls to decorate my high bouffant. I started by releasing the pin curls and I used small pins to pin the curls into the bouffant.

I am extremely pleased with how it came out, I wish I'd had time to finish it completely however my model had quite thick hair which meant that crimping her hair took quite a while. This means I need to be quicker and be more efficient with time keeping. I'm happy with the placement of the curls to as I tried to think of where to pin the curls and I think it came out great.

Using Padding to create an Elizabethan Hairstyle

I used the technique I'd learnt in my previous lesson on padding and incorporated it into an Elizabethan Hairstyle. Initial I was just going to curl the front using the pin curl technique and crimp the rest of the hair into a high bouffant, however I went slightly into a different direction. I start by crimping the hair completely and created a heart shape at the back using padding then with the remaining hair I decided to incorporate into the heart shape at the back, I wanted the middle parting to stand out. With the hair at the front I was just going to leave it curl and pull the curls onto the heart shape however I decided last minute to crimp the hair and create two separate smaller bouffants this create a double heart shape hair style. I really enjoyed creating this and I'm thinking about using aspects of this in my final project as I think it's slightly different however I need to think of something to make it contemporary too. I also need to think about making sure all the hair is tighly secure so it all stays up.

Creating Elizabethan Hairstyles with Braids and Buns

Using the Techniques I learnt from creating plaits and buns I incorporated it into an Elizabethan inspired hairstyle. I firstly parted the hair into a middle parting at the front, I created a french braid on the sides and I sectioned off some hair to create the bun on the top. I had a little difficultly creating the bun as I found it wasn't as neat as my previous bun. With the remaining hair at the bottom I wasn't sure at first what to do with it so I decided to create an interesting french braid which I wanted to fall to the side. I added a ribbon at the end of the braid. For my first attempt at creating an Elizabethan Hairstyle it wasn't too bad however next time I'd like to have a clear vision of what I want to create and I'll try to make it slightly neater.
